Useful things that will help you running your programme:
Setting up a programme record form so that you can evaluate your sessions and also keep accurate records for the LEA.
Regularly observing your volunteers and giving them feedback is essential and it also very daunting.
Things that helped me to give feedback (which was my least favourite task but the most important!):
- remembering that people just want to do the best for your wonderful child and are really pleased and grateful to be given feedback on how to be more effective at doing this.
- If the person doesn’t like or appreciate the feedback then, to be honest, they aren’t really right for your process.
- When you’re observing look for 3 things that you want to celebrate and to start with 1 thing that you would like the person to improve or focus on.
- Filming the session is really useful and showing the volunteer, because they often come up with more constructive criticism than you could!
Team Meetings are really useful and essential to keep the team informed. Helpful hints – set an agenda, including things like:
- review of the month
- Ask people to share one thing about their sessions.
- review the goals
- Explain new goals
- Creative brainstorming eg think of ways to use a prop off the shelf in different ways or something like charades so that the team get used to being more expressive and start to feel less self conscious. (often letting yourself go in the playroom and being observed are the things that worry people the most, it was for me anyway!)
Emailing regular updates about motivations and current issues is also really useful. With facebook, families are also able to make good use of this to communicate to their team.
